- Build rapport with you
- Listen to understand more about you and your work context
- Ask probing questions to develop their and your understanding of a situation or problem
- Help you identify areas of development
- Offer different perspectives, relevant tips, information and knowledge (from their own experiences)
- Provide support and encouragement and be a sounding board as well as a critical friend
- Encourage self-reflection
